Dandruff

The medical term for dandruff is “seborrheic dermatitis”. While it commonly causes scaling, itching, and redness of the scalp, it can also cause a similar rash on the face, chest, and skin folds.

In infants, this is known as “cradle cap”. In adulthood, seborrheic can be chronic and difficult to control.

If over the counter treatments are not working for your seborrheic dermatitis, we can help.

What causes seborrheic dermatitis?

Dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis, is caused by the overgrowth of a yeast called pityrosporum ovale. Because the yeast is a normal component of the skin, this condition is not contagious. Stress and certain illnesses can make this condition worse.

Treatments of seborrheic dermatitis

  • Anti-yeast shampoos and creams: zinc, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, ciclopirox

  • Cortisone shampoos, liquids, and creams. Cortisone can help control the inflammation caused by yeast

  • Oral antifungal medications
