Broken Capillaries/Redness

The presence of broken capillaries (telangiectasias) and redness on the skin can be difficult to mask or cover with make-up.

Broken capillaries and redness can develop from sun exposure, which weakens the walls of capillaries on the skin, or from conditions that cause dilation of vessels, such as rosacea.

At Virginia Square Dermatology, we can help you find the correct treatment to help get your skin tone more even.

What are different types of redness on the skin?

  • Telangiectasias: red to purple vessels on the face resulting from sun damage or rosacea

  • Post-inflammatory erythema: pink patches caused by other skin conditions

  • Spider veins: small purple vessels on the lower extremities

  • Angiomas: red, circular flat or raised spots

How can broken capillaries or redness be treated?

Treating any underlying skin conditions (ie rosacea, acne, seborrheic dermatitis) will be an important component of controlling your redness. Treatment options include:

  • Topical oxymetazoline or brimonidine

  • Laser (Intense Pulsed Light)

  • Electrodessication
