Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition of the skin where the body attacks the cells that produce melanin.

This causes white or depigmented patches of skin, hair, and even lips.

Vitiligo can be challenging to treat, and causes significant psychological impact.

At Virginia Square Dermatology, we will be able to help you with the diagnosis and treatment of this difficult condition.

What causes vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition. It can run in families and be seen in patients with other autoimmune conditions, like thyroid disease. Trauma to the skin and exposure to certain chemicals can also trigger this condition.

How is vitiligo treated?

The course of vitiligo can be unpredictable, with some patients only developing a few areas of involvement over time, and others having extensive spread of the disease. The goal of treatment is to prevent disease progression and to repigment affected areas. It is important for patients to protect affected areas from the sun. Treatments include:

  • Makeup to cover patches (ie Dermablend)

  • Topical corticosteroids, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, calcipotriene, and bimatoprost

  • Phototherapy

  • Excimer laser
