Infections

Some rashes and skin growths are caused by infections of the skin with bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites.

If you have a new rash or growth, an evaluation by a board-certified dermatologist is important in order to prevent spread and complications from skin infections.

What are some types of skin infections?

Skin infections are classified based on the type of organism affecting the skin. They include:

1. Bacterial infections

  • Impetigo

  • Abscesses

2. Viral infections

  • Molluscum contagiosum

  • Verruca (common warts, genital warts)

  • Herpes simplex virus

  • Varicella zoster virus (chickenpox, shingles)

3. Fungal infections

  • Ringworm

  • Nail fungus

  • Athlete’s foot

  • Jock itch

4. Parasitic infections

  • Scabies

  • Lice

How are skin infections treated?

The treatment for your skin infection will depend on the cause. First, we will need to determine the cause of your infection through a clinical exam or special testing and cultures. Then, the infection can be treated through topical or oral medications, and sometimes even through “destructive” methods like liquid nitrogen, curettage, and cantharidin.
